history
History of Aberdeen Wanderers RFC - Founded 1928
In January 1928 a new club formed in the city called Aberdeen Engineers RFC which later changed its name to Aberdeen Wanderers in 1934. At that time Wanderers was one of the first teams to be open to any person not permanently based in the city. Previous city clubs were closed with membership only open to former pupils of a school or university.
In 1948 Aberdeen Centralians RFC was formed for FP's of Aberdeen Central School which later became Aberdeen Academy and consequently changed its name to Aberdeen Academicals RFC. In 1971 Wanderers and Academicals merged to become Wanderers Accies and in 1991 another local side Granite City RFC merged with us and the club
reverted back to its former name of Aberdeen Wanderers RFC.
In 1991 a youth section was started which has grown over the years to a point where we now playing at all age groups. Over the years a number of our youth players have been selected for the North & Caledonia District representative squads.
The teams have gone from strength to Strength regularly appearaing in the top 4 in the Caledonia league and Caledonia Cup , Bowl and Plate finals. Indeed the U-16 side of 2005 won the U-16 Caledonia Cup and the following year won the U-17 bowl. For the next 2 years the U-18 team got to the semi-finals of the cup, only to be beaten by Stirling on both occasions.
Some of the Clubs youth players have represented Caledonia at age group level and many have represented the Hurricanes U-16 and U-15 terms. Most notable of these is Jason White who not only played and captained the Scottish Schools, Scotland Under 19, Under 21 and Scotland teams. He won his first full Scotland Cap a few years ago and is an ever present member of the current Scotland International squad.
However recently the club has had more success with Ashleah Mcculloch has won caps at U-19 and for Scotland sevens and most recently at U-20. Also George Hunter has won caps at U-18 for Scotland whilst with the club. These players have moved on with the help of the club and coaches to get bigger and better things.
It is this Youth policy that has created the presnt team who are enjoying suv=ccess, almost 65% of the team come from out own Youth policy.
